Boy reported over iPad genital photo

A 13-year-old boy has been reported by police for sending a picture of his genitals to classmates, while three others are accused of passing it on.

It is claimed the Year 8 student took the photo on his iPad, then sent it to three classmates, who allegedly posted it online.

They have all been suspended by the school, and it is feared they could even end up on the sex offenders’ register.

“The law itself needs to be review and revised because we’re turning -potentially - silly 13-year-olds into criminals and ruining their lives,” Independent MP Bob Such said.

Premier Jay Weatherill agreed and said the government would have to look at the laws.

Attorney General John Rau said there are no minors currently on the sex offenders’ register.

“People under 18 who are charged and convicted of these offences do not wind up on the register,” Mr Rau said.

Mr Such said some of the teens involved in the scandal are emotionally fragile.

“Parents have come to me saying they have had detectives on their doorstep, thier 13-year-old daughter in tears being told you may never be able to work with children,” Mr Such said.

Police Commissioner Gary Burns said in a statement today that it was responsible and appropriate for officers to inform students of the possible life-long repercussions that a seemingly harmless prank can have.

The Education Department said the school involved held cyber safety education earlier this year.

But experts are calling for the classes to be rolled out across the education system.

“I do think it needs to be part of the curriculum.. I think it needs to be a high priority,” psychologist Kirrilie Smout said.
