North Adelaide’s O’Connell St was flooded with water this afternoon after a car crashed into a fire hydrant.

The driver of the vehicle is believed to have suffered a medical episode and lost control of his car just after midday.

His car mounted the footpath, knocked over a fire hydrant and crashed into two buildings before slamming into a tree.

Witnesses said they ran to help the people in the car.

“He clearly wasn’t well when they pulled him out of the driver’s seat and they had to work on him and he was clearly fitting badly,” witness Dr Darryl Cross told 7News.

Police said the man driving the car and a young boy who - was a passenger in the vehicle - had been taken to hospital, but had escaped injury from the accident.

Firefighters and State Emergency Service (SES) workers managed to save five nearby businesses from flooding as the fire hydrant spewed water into O’Connell St.

The road was re-opened to traffic by 3pm.
