Ski group helps suicide prevention

An epic journey down the Murray is getting the boys from the bush talking.

The ‘Water ski for Life’ project is navigating Adelaide’s lifeline to raise awareness about depression and suicide.

A team of 35, relay water skiing 500 km from Renmark to Murray Bridge through communities being quietly devastated by depression and suicide.

Tim Watt is one example; he lost his brother to suicide.

“Our rural community where I come from, like in the general district, we're probably averaging a suicide a month,” Bill Stockman said.

He’s the driving force behind this. it's a journey that’s taken him a long time

“When I was 14 on my farm I had a shooting accident and killed my best friend,” Mr. Stockman said.

Two decades later, he attempted suicide. Then, he got help with dozens sharing similar stories with him

The group's been rocked by a recent suicide right under their noses

“That really hit home, so like I say we're trying to make a difference,” Mr. Stockman said.

This project is raising money to train men in providing support to those doing it hard around them.

They can show by example, when you get down, you can get back up again.
