SA's new brand causing a stir

The new logo promoting South Australia to the world has been revealed, but it has received mixed reactions.

It shows an origami-style map of Australia, with a doorway over South Australia, and those behind the campaign say it will launch the state onto a new international stage.

Critics have been forthcoming in their assessment of the new logo on social media.

Some have questioned its resemblance to other logos, while others were keen to point out that Tasmania doesn’t even feature as part of Australia in the logo’s ‘map’.

Hashtags #brandsouthaustralia, #brandingsa and #brandsa have been getting a solid workout on Twitter throughout the day as people give their thoughts on the new logo.

"Embarrassed by the new #brandingsouthaustralia... who designed this?" Spencer Harrison (@spenceroni) tweeted.

Michael Smyth (@MichaelSmyth_), drive-time host with ABC 891 Adelaide tweeted: “Last one out, please shut the door? #brandsouthaustralia”.

But the feedback isn’t all negative, with some Twitter users seeing potential in the new branding.

“The #brandingsouthaustralia concept gets better when you see the executions at http://www.brandsouthaustralia.com.au. Door device over image has legs,” Mark Scruby (@markscruby) tweeted.

Critics and supporters have also taken to the 7News Adelaide Facebook page to express their opinion.

“Ridiculous, ugly, waste of money, looks more like a bank logo,” wrote Sahrita Williams.

Lorraine Parks commented: “I love it...it's hip, clear and concise, sure beats the big red 'dot' depicting Tourism on the Gold Coast...well done.”

The new logo was part of the $1.3million branding campaign launched at a special function at Adelaide’s Elder Park on Wednesday evening, with the image projected onto the roof of the Festival Centre.

Its designer Ken Cato says he has been rapt with the reception.

“I can’t think of anywhere where they’ve taken the country as a way of explaining the state," he said.
