Robbery on armoured van at Broadway

Four gunmen remain on the run tonight after opening fire in an inner-Sydney street during a botched robbery.

Their target was an Armaguard cash van outside the Broadway Shopping Centre during the morning rush.

Witnesses say it was like watching a movie being made.

A gutsy cafe owner recorded the violent stand-off between guards and gunmen, from beginning to end.

Three men, armed with what appear to be assault rifles surrounded the Armaguard van.

One guard was still inside, while the other was outside the vehicle.

A fourth bandit was waiting in an Audi station wagon for a quick getaway, but it wasn't happening, and their patience was being tested.

"Yeah, just stay there. S**t. F**k. Oh no," they are heard saying.

A shot was fired, with fears a guard had been hit, until he was seen backing away slowly with his arms raised.

"They asked him a couple of times to open the door," witness Barry Zambrano said.

"He wouldn't and then they came to the back of the truck trying to open that up as well with no success."

It happened at 8:15am, outside Broadway's Bay Street entrance.

Hundreds of people, customers, shoppers, commuters and workers were astonished and scared.

"I told my customers just, you know, to step back," said one worker who did not want to be identified.

"My hand started shaking, so it was pretty scary, it's not a nice thing to go through."

"I thought I was watching a movie, to be honest, I was looking for cameras filming, but there were no cameras."

The gunmen looked to be giving up as they headed back towards the Audi, but then two of the men jumped out of the car carrying what appears to be an AK-47 assault rifle.

One shot was fired into the shopping centre's glass awning, and the other end of the gun was used too.

"One of the guards was struck to the back of the head and received treatment at the scene by ambulance officers however his injuries weren't serious," Superintendent Michael O'Toole said.

The gang pushed hard, but neither the guard they had hit, nor his colleague inside the truck, would budge.

The bandits left in the stolen Audi, without a cent.
