Tax office takes Tinkler to court

The tax office is seeking to wind up Nathan Tinkler's Newcastle Knights and the Newcastle Jets.

The struggling mining magnate's Hunter Sports Group owes the tax office more than $2.7 million dollars on behalf of his football interest alone.

"We are suprised by the move by the ATO, as we have not received notification of this move," a spokesperson for the Hunter Sports Group wrote in a statement this afternoon.

"We advise that any outstanding sum will be paid as soon as possible - well before the reported hearing date on the matter new February."
