German tourist mauled by dingo

A 23-year-old tourist has been airlifted from Fraser Island to mainland Queensland after being attacked by a dingo on Saturday.

The Department of National Parks says the German national suffered significant injury to his head, legs and arms, but remains in a stable condition.

Regional manager of the department, Ross Belcher, says the man had been fallen asleep on a track after becoming disoriented and leaving a well-lit campground.

"This incident serves as an ongoing reminder that dingoes are wild animals and need to be treated as such," Mr Belcher said.

"The way to avoid such incidents is for all people to follow the department's dingo safety messages."

Rangers have reportedly increased their presence on the island since the attack.
