Police escape hen's night after being mistaken for strippers

Police officers had a narrow escape after putting their lives on the line in one of their most dangerous operations to date - taking on a group of women on a hen's night who mistook them for strippers.

The Northern Territory officers were called out to the Humpty Doo Tavern in rural Darwin last night, reports ABC.

They found the bar itself quiet but when they investigated further and checked out the nearby Humpty Doo Hotel they were pounced on by a group of women out celebrating a hen's night.

The women mistook the officers for strippers and pounced but police managed to escape with their dignity - and uniforms - just about intact.

"The girls were in fine form," said Northern watch commander Louise Jorgenson, who confirmed no police action will be taken.

"They were most excited about the police presence.

"There were various shouts about how the strippers had arrived.

"They nearly had their shirts torn off, but they managed to escape with their dignity intact."

Senior sergeant Bob Harrison added: "They were mistaken for strippers - I don't know any strippers that wear accoutrements belts and turn up in a police car."
