Child, 9, dies in holiday road tragedy

A young boy has died in a holiday road tragedy that has also left two of his brothers fighting for life.

The family of six from Singapore was travelling to Melbourne from Sydney on the Hume Freeway, near Seymour, when their rented minibus ran off the road and crashed into a tree, shortly after 7am.

Police say the vehicle flipped several times and hit the only tree in a 500-metre stretch of road.

A nine-year-old boy died at the scene, while two other boys, aged 12 and 15, were flown to the Royal Children's Hospital in a critical condition.

Police believe the four boys in the car may have been asleep at the time, and unrestrained.

Their 47-year-old father, who was driving and trapped in the car for sometime, was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition.

A 44-year-old woman and a 13-year-old child were taken to the Northern Hospital in a stable condition.

Police believe fatigue may have been a major factor in the crash, and are urging motorists to stop, revive and survive.

Senior Sergeant Ralph Willingham told Seven News: "Early indications are fatigue as the primary cause. We have been putting out that fatigue message for a long, long time now.

"We ask motorists to take heed, share the driving and pull over when they can, and arrive alive."

The fatality takes Victoria's road toll this year to 130 - 14 less than at the same time last year.
