Grieving police still under resourced

As police officers and the community prepare to grieve again, it has been revealed the Coomera Police District is still desperately under resourced.

The Police Union fears more lives will be lost if the service doesn't act.

At the police station where Constable Damian Leeding worked, the flag is already at half mast.

Officers are still grieving and according to the Union, they're suffering at the hands of their own service.

"It is a high crime area, high growth and it is simply being neglected," Police Union President Ian Leavers says.

In the wake of Constable Leeding’s death, a new Tactical Crime Squad was established at Coomera.

But the new team wasn't given any police cars - until recently, the officers have had to borrow cars from the CIB.

The Tactical Crime Squad is now using a car that's supposed to belong to Coomera's top cop.

"They've been asked why the mileage is up and why the fuel bill is so high and that's just a joke in itself," Mr Leavers said.

"Even in the dog squad they have to borrow a vehicle from the Gold Coast so the Coomera dog squad can operate, like this is just absurd, it is disgraceful and just reeks of mismanagement."

Queensland's new police minister was only made aware of the situation today during an interview with 7 News. He says he'll meet with the Commissioner immediately.

"I'll be taking it up with the commissioner to make sure we have a structured response that meets the needs of the Community at Coomera," Queensland Police Minister Jack Dempsey said.

He blames the Bligh Government but the Union hopes that excuse won’t be used for too much longer.

"Let's not make Coomera suffer any more than it already has," Mr Leavers said.
