Man shot dead by police

A man has been shot dead by police following an incident at Bracken Ridge in Brisbane's north.

It is believed two detectives attended the property at Ivor Street when they were confronted by a 36-year-old man brandishing a gun.

Police were investigating property offences before they were confronted by the man who pointed a gun at them, according to Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers.

"He is very well known to police - he has an extensive criminal history including a lot of property offences and escaping custody of police.

"Police have gone to the address and met the man's girlfriend - they have done a consensual search inside the house," he said to a throng of waiting media.

After the detectives were approached by the gun-wielding man from the back of the house, they immediately retaliated according to Mr Leavers.

"Police produced their firearms and fired a volley of shots and two shots hit the man," he said.

One of the shots hit the man in the stomach, with the other hitting him in the chest.

"When a firearm is produced you have to make an instant decision and if you don't, you could end up deceased yourself," Mr Leavers explained.

Paramedics were called to the scene after the incident occurred. They worked on resuscitating the man for almost an hour but were unsuccessful.

The man's girlfriend and two children were inside the house at the time of the incident.

The shooting will be the subject of an internal police investigation.
