Tradesman injured during attempted tool theft

A tradesman has escaped with cuts and bruises after holding onto a car bonnet while trying to stop thieves from stealing his work tools.

Harry Hicks and his partner Courtney Deacon had arrived at their Plenty, Vic home after midnight last night to find two men trying to steal carpentry tools from Harry's trailer.

Harry's tool boxes were sitting on the road outside the trailer and the thieves jumped into their get-away car.

Harry attempted to block their path but the culprits struck him with their car.

He managed to hold onto the windscreen wipers of the car until the car began to fishtail.

"They came towards me trying to scare me, but I stood my ground," Harry said. "I just grabbed onto the bonnet and held on.

"Your instinct comes out - it was fight or flight.

"You learn a bit about yourself when something like this happens."

As Harry was coming down the hill in the bonnet, Courtney was too panicked to note the registration number of the car.

But Harry was intent on doing as much damage as he could so it could be more easily identified.

"I was holding onto the bonnet, and I was just staring at the guy driving," Harry explained.

"I was just staring into his eyes and holding onto the windscreen wipers. I was just furious."

The thieves were jolting the car trying to throw Harry off, and after a few seconds, Harry could no longer hold on and he rolled off with a windscreen wiper in his hand.

"He was getting faster and faster and all I could hear was Courtney screaming. I thought, I gotta bail, and get off here, it's too much," Harry explained.

"It doesn't feel like that really just happened. Feels like a movie, they make it look a lot easier in the films."

Harry was treated at the scene for bruises and scratches.

Nothing was stolen in the incident, but police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.

The male offenders are both believed to be in their mid-twenties, and the driver has a slim build with brown collar-length hair.
