Cute tortoises get Thanksgiving treat

While most of America was enjoying Thanksgiving dinner last week, some lucky tortoises at San Diego Zoo didn't miss out on the treats.

17 Galapagos tortoises were given their own pumpkin and ate every last piece, seeds and all, officials said.

Some of the tortoises were estimated to be about 130 years old and have lived in the zoo since 1928.

"Each tortoise receives their own pumpkin," said senior zookeeper Jenna Ramsey. "It's their post-Thanksgiving meal and it's great enrichment for them. They love pumpkins and orange is their favourite colour."

The cute pics of the hungry tortoises have been released online to help promote the zoo's breeding program. The San Diego Zoo has one of the largest colonies of Galapagos tortoises in the world outside of the Ecuadorian Islands.
