A man has been mauled to death by his own dogs in Northland, New Zealand.

The grisly death occurred on Thursday afternoon in Panguru, a remote town 300km north of Auckland, with police warning locals to be wary of dogs on the run.

A police statement said four dogs got loose as they attempted to secure the "aggressive behaving" animals, and one was shot and killed.

"The other three dogs are still outstanding," a police official said.

"Police are urging the public to avoid any stray dogs, and to let us know if you have any information of their whereabouts."

TVNZ reported the death was of a 69-year-old man who owned six dogs.
