You've been hanging your Christmas tree lights all wrong

If you’ve always wished for a glorious Christmas tree worthy of a magazine cover, but generally end up with something a bit wonky and sad, there’s one secret to nailing the decorations – and it’s all to do with the lights.

While most of us go crazy wrapping Chrissie lights around the tree itself, experts say we should be draping them vertically rather than horizontally.

Hang your lights vertically for more of an impact, say experts.

“This way every tip of your tree, from branch to branch, will twinkle with delight,” designer Francesco Bilotto told House Beautiful.

Hanging the lights vertically also means less stress about making sure they look neat and tidy.

All you have to do is take the end of the lights without a plug and start at the top of the tree. Loosely drape them down in a straight line.

Once you get to the bottom, pull the lights to the right about seven to 10 centimetres (depending on the size of the tree) and bring them back up to the top. Repeat until your tree is lit up.

If you really want to amp up the sparkle, Francesco advises to “hang your shiniest ornaments deeper inside the tree and the light will reflect off of them”.

An extra bonus? Your lights will be even easier to take down!
