Young family rescued from flooded storm water drain

A young Melbourne family and their dog have been rescued from waist-deep storm water after a drain flooded rapidly.

Around 8pm Sunday, the family of four were riding their bikes with their dog through tunnels at Scotchman’s Creek, Mount Waverley, when they became stuck in waist-deep storm water.

Rain water rose so fast it trapped the young family and their dog halfway down the tunnel.

“The mother and the two children and the family dog were trapped and ended up hanging onto the wall,” Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) Commander Trudy Walker told 7 News.

The family quickly called for help and 24 fire fighters came to their rescue.

They put on personal flotation devices and set up rope lines, then slowly pulled the woman and her family to safety in a 30-minute operation.

Earlier this year a man in a mobility scooter died after falling down an embankment into the same drain.

The MFB is now warning the public not to take the risk during storm events.
