'Worst moment of my life': Couple reveal twist in 'devastating' proposal

The hunt for a couple who lost an engagement ring moments after a proposal in Times Square is over.

The New York Police Department shared video of a man and a woman looking through a drain in Times Square on Sunday.

It was initially reported the man had dropped the engagement ring about 2.5 metres down a utility grate. It happened on Friday and the couple asked emergency service officers for help but they couldn’t retrieve the ring.

The ring was eventually found but the couple left without providing any identification.

Police took to Twitter to find the couple in the hopes of reuniting them with the piece of jewellery.

They’ve since been identified by the New York Times as English couple John Drennan, 36, and Daniella Anthony, 34.

Mr Drennan had earlier proposed in Central Park but the ring was too big.

However, the husband-to-be insisted his fiancée wear the jewellery, which unfortunately fell down the drain as they were walking back to their hotel.

Ms Anthony was heartbroken. The ring hadn’t been insured either.

“I was devastated,” she told The Times.

“I was literally crying. It was the worst moment of my life.”

A child gave Ms Anthony a hug as she sobbed. The couple believed they would never see the ring again and didn’t file a police report. They wanted to keep the whole incident secret and Mr Drennan has since purchased another engagement ring.

However, on Monday, NYPD tweeted the couple had been found.

“Thank you, Twitter. Case closed!” police tweeted.

“Love, John, Daniella, and the NYPD.”

The couple were found due to retweets and widespread coverage of the story and heard the NYPD were looking for them, police said.

The 36-year-old was sent a message from a friend asking him if he was the one looking down the grate in the video. The groom contacted authorities in New York and confirmed it was him.

Mr Anthony said he’s “ecstatic” the ring was found. He plans to get a refund for the new ring and have the other one re-sized.

He plans to use the money spent on the new ring to return to New York and buy coffee for the NYPD officers who retrieved the jewellery.
