'World's loneliest duck' who was living alone on remote island suffers tragic fate

The world’s loneliest duck has been killed by a dog.

Trevor, the only duck on the Pacific Island of Niue, 2,400km northeast of New Zealand, had earned somewhat of a celebrity status as he was the only quacking resident on the entire isle.

He was named after New Zealand Parliamentary speaker Trevor Mallard, who was hit particularly hard by the news.

“Deepest sympathy to the people of Niue from the Parliament of New Zealand,” speaker Mallard said.

Trevor was a popular novelty on the island and residents even started a Facebook profile to provide updates on his daily habits.

It’s believed he flew, or was blown, on to the island during a bad storm in 2018.

Since his unexpected arrival he set up home near a puddle by the side of the road and was frequently photographed by residents and tourists alike.
