Macca's Szechuan sauce 'traded' for VW following frenzy sparked by cartoon 'Rick and Morty'

In a deal that seems too good to be true, a woman has reportedly traded a single packet of McDonald’s nugget sauce for a Volkswagen.

It comes after a “super-limited batch” of Macca’s “Szechuan dipping sauce” was snapped up in minutes.

The frenzy over the sauce began after a gag on cult cartoon Rick and Morty back in April, when the show’s creators made clear their desire to see the product back in production almost 20 years after it was available to promote the Disney movie Mulan in 1998.

Following pressure from the popular cartoon’s fans, McDonald’s announced it would be selling a very limited supply of the dipping sauce across the US for one day only.

However, the fast food giant seemingly underestimated demand for the product – or there was an intended false scarcity – and stores ran out within minutes of its release last Sunday.

One woman who snapped up the coveted sauce was 23-year-old Rachel Marie from Detroit, Michigan, who headed to Macca’s with a friend to stand ninth in line for the 25.5g sachet.

Instead of dipping her fries, she listed it on a Facebook group to see what others were willing to trade for it.

One man was so desperate he reportedly offered his red 2004 Volkswagen Mk4.

The trader, who wished to remain anonymous, told Business Insider “I just needed me some friggin sauce!!”

Last Sunday, Rick and Morty fans across America were swept into a frenzy and started protests outside the restaurants, demanding they be supplied with the sauce.

Customers queued for hours to get their hands on the highly sought after sauce, however they were devastated when they got to the top of the line and were told the sauce was all sold out.

That’s when things went downhill for some of the stores, who were forced to call police to try to disperse the crowds that had gathered outside.

According to Twitter user Ian Sikes, one McDonald’s store had over 1000 people queuing outside but they only had 70 sauces to give out.

“Angry crowd chants ‘We want sauce’ as police force them back. 1000+ people camped out to get #szechuansauce but McDonalds had 70 sauces,” he wrote online.

The dipping sauces have already started to appear one eBay with one person selling theirs for $600 a pop.

Following the furore over the very small release, Macca’s has promised to stock its stores with enough supply to appease the masses.

“Our super-limited batch, though well-intentioned, clearly wasn’t near enough to meet demand,” the fast food giant said in an online statement.

“Instead of being one-day-only and limited to select restaurants, we’re bringing more - a lot more - so that any fan who’s willing to do whatever it takes for Szechuan Sauce will only have to ask for it at nearby McDonald’s.”

In telling fans to “stay tuned” it’s likely the promised unlimited supply will soon put an end to the condiment being used as currency.
