Video captures student knocking down teacher in classroom assault

A high school student in the US has been arrested after punching and knocking down a teacher during a class.

Other students captured video of a 16-year-old and a teacher exchanging words before the student shoves the teacher and knocks him to the ground, and then continues to punch him.

A parent of one student who recorded the incident on their phone told FOX 6 News, "I was shocked. I feel like there's no place for that in school."

The incident took place on Tuesday at the South Division High School in Milwaukee.

"He went down. Could have hit his head. He could have been killed," said Milwaukee Alderman Bob Donovan.

Media outlets are claiming it is not known what led to the violent reaction, and the argument in the footage is inaudible.

Fox 6 reports that something the teacher said offended the 16-year-old.

"You know, if a person says something about you, you either walk away or you say something back. But the teacher didn't put his hands on him," one parent who is shocked about the altercation said.

The teacher is expected to make a full recovery and the teen was taken to a juvenile detention centre.

Milwaukee Public Schools released a statement on the incident:

"MPS is cooperating with the Milwaukee Police Department to investigate a situation that occurred today at 1515 W Lapham Blvd. Due to this being an ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further."

It is expected that charges will be presented to the District Attorney's Office soon.
