'It was chaos': Children among six injured as car ploughs into worshippers near mosque

Six people have been hospitalised overnight after a car ploughed into a group of Muslim worshippers leaving Eld prayers in Newcastle, northeast England.

Hundreds of people had gathered at Westgate Sports Centre on Sunday to celebrate Eid, the end of Ramadan, when a car mounted the kerb outside and collected unsupecting pedestrians.

British Police said they do not believe terrorism was involved.

Eyewitnesses said that one boy, aged around eight, "was really badly injured" in the horrifiyng accident.

"The lady lost control of the car and hit some people, two of them were kids," witness Asif Anwar told The Chronicle.

"It was chaos, everyone was panicking, people just don’t know what is going on these days.

"Terrorism is what everyone was thinking straight away."

Imran Khalil was with his two children who are aged six and 10 when the ordeal unfolded just metres away from them.

“It was horrible, the children were just standing eating candyfloss when the car crashed into them.

“I saw the children fall to the ground, they were screaming, I was extremely scared.”

Police said they had arrested a 42-year-old woman, who is currently in custody.

"We have taken six people to hospital, they have gone to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, three children and three adults," he said.

The accident comes just one week after a van drove into a group of worshippers near a mosque in north London, killing one person.

There were estimated to be around 300 to 400 Muslims in the area at the time.
