Young boy dies of heatstroke after falling asleep in school van

A Malaysian boy has died after he was left sleeping in a daycare van for three hours that was taken home by the young driver unaware the lad was in the back.

Six-year-old Muhammad Iqram Danish was picked up along with three other children and taxied to class at 2pm on Saturday in Kuala Lumpur, the New Straits Times reports.

When the children arrived at the school the other three children exited the vehicle but Iqram was left sleeping the back.

Unaware the boy was resting in the car, the 21-year-old driver took the van home, locked it and parked it in the afternoon heat for three hours.

Only when the driver hopped in the van to return to school at 5pm did he realise Iqram was in the back.

"The driver only realised that Iqram was still in the van when he was about to fetch the kids from kindergarten at 5pm," deputy police chief Superintendent Mohd Marzuki Mohd Mokhtar said.

"By then, Iqram was already unconscious."

The police chief said the driver rushed Iqram to a nearby clinic and then to a hospital "where the boy was pronounced dead due to heatstroke".

The newspaper reports the driver's statement was provided to police and the matter is being investigated as a matter of neglect under the Child Acts 2001.
