Magnitude 5.6 earthquake strikes central Italy

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake has struck central Italy with tremors felt in the capital Rome, more than 170 kilometres to the south.

The epicentre of the quake was south-southwest of the central city of Visso, at a depth of 6 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.

There are no reports yet of serious injury or damage.

This quake follows another powerful earthquake in August that struck the same region, near the mountain town of Amatrice that killed 300 people and left scores more displaced.
