Wife admits bomb hoax in attempt to stop husband boarding plane

A woman has admitted to making a false bomb threat in a bid to stop her husband boarding a plane in Geneva, Swiss authorities confirmed.

The woman's threat caused traffic chaos around the Geneva Airport as tightened security measures were enforced on Wednesday.

Police quickly traced the call to a number in Annecy in France, roughly 45km from Geneva.

Officers then raided that address where the woman admitted to making the hoax call.

"She said that today a person carrying a bomb would be in the French sector of the airport," the Geneva prosecutor's office said in a statement.

"They found a woman who admitted to having made the call and explained that she wanted thereby to prevent her husband from leaving."

The incident saw security ramped up at the airport with officers carrying machine guns put on duty.

Most entrances to the airport were closed with heavily armed police filtering passengers through.

The woman is now facing criminal charges for the threat.
