Doctor shot and killed by patient in Berlin

A doctor in Germany has been shot and killed by a former patient, Berlin police have confirmed.

Shots were heard at a university clinic in Steglitz, Berlin around 11am local time on Tuesday.

The doctor had been critically injured inside the Benjamin Franklin University Hospital after a former patient opened fire.

The gunman then turned the weapon on himself in what is not a terror-related attack.

The doctor, whose age in unknown, was rushed to surgery as police locked down the campus.

Despite the best efforts of colleagues, the doctor died as a result of the gunshot injuries.

"The doctor at the #CBF in #Steglitz unfortunately passed away," Berlin police said on Twitter.

"We have no evidence of other injured people or more offenders."

Police remain at the scene.
