Canada's new, young PM toasts Queen Elizabeth's 'lifetime of service', draws cheeky royal response

Canada's newly minted Prime Minster Justin Trudeau toasted Queen Elizabeth at the Commonwealth Heads of Government dinner, leading to a colourful exchange between the on Twitter.

During the leaders' summit dinner on Friday the 43-year-old politician joked with the 89-year-old monarch that he was the 12th Canadian PM to serve during her reign.


Mr Trudeau also remarked how he had met her at Buckingham Palace as lad when his father Pierre Trudeau served as the fourth Canadian PM under her rule.

The PM also reminded Queen Elizabeth of her first "official duty on behalf of Canada," when she appeared on a postage stamp in 1935.

The Queen took to Twitter to thank the PM, in a cheeky way, for making her majesty "feel old".

Mr Trudeau replied, thanking the "forever young" queen for her "lifetime of service".

Some have questioned whether royal octogenarian and the younger PM were having a bit of a flirt – which was further played upon when it was reported they had another conversation about his height.

"The last time we met you were much taller," Mr Trudeau said, according to CBC.



The Queen replied: "It's nice to see you again … but under different circumstances."

The PM later praised the Queen for "lovely and gracious" on every occasion they had met over their many years of acquaintance.
