Primary school girl's hilarious response to dating 'problem' in her math homework

A fourth grader in the US has become an internet sensation after giving a hilarious answer to a complicated maths question.

Last week, Maddy Douglas was assigned a number of word problems in her math homework. One of those questions involved eight students and their dating habits.

The question stated: “In high school, Frank, Mike, George, and Ron each went out on a total of 4 dates with 4 different girls. The second time Frank dated Rose and George dated Kay. The third time Mike dated Mary and Ron dated Louise. The fourth time, George dated Louise and Ron dated Kay. For each of the 4 times, tell which girl dated which boy.”

On her homework, Maddy wrote that she wasn’t able to answer to the question because of the rules of friendship.

The fourth-grader said that she couldn’t answer the problem because her mum says according to girl code, you shouldn’t date a friend’s ex-boyfriend.

Her mother Jenn Douglas, shared the photo on Facebook, using the hashtag #girlcodetrumpscommoncore.

While she saw the humour in her daughter’s response, Jenn commented that she was horrified that fourth-graders would be presented with questions about dating.

“I was NOT happy about this at ALL,” she wrote in the comments alongside the photo. “I don’t care if they prefaced it with ‘in high school.’ Still not appropriate.”

Comments on Jenn’s photo echoed her concerns. “That’s too much drama for those four kids in high school. And this is not an appropriate math question,” said one user. “Fourth grade math problems talk about dating scenarios? Oh man, we are in trouble!” wrote another.

Still, others thought Jenn may have overreacted to the wording, and that her daughter should not be rewarded for skipping the question.

“If the daughter has already learned ‘girl code’ then I see no issue with a math problem that mentions dating,” wrote another commenter.

One person who did have a sense of humor about the answer? Maddy’s teacher. As Jenn told HuffPost Parents: “Her teacher laughed at her answer and told her: ‘Good point.’”
