Skydiver hits power lines at Memorial Day event

A skydiver in the US has slammed into the ground after hitting power lines at a Memorial Day weekend celebration.

John Pitts was skydiving as part of 'Red, White and You', a Vietnam Travelling Memorial Wall event in Winchester, Tennessee on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Pitts who was skydiving as part of the Fly Like You Mean It skydiving team, was attempting to make a turn when strong winds propelled him into power lines. He then fell over 10 metres and hit the ground.

The crowds rushed to help Mr Pitts as an announcer urged them to stay calm and remain where they were as the remaining two skydivers landed.

WKRN-TV reports that while the second skydiver landed without any injuries, the third team member hit a rock.

Mr Pitts was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he is in a stable condition.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the accident.
