Australian killed while fighting in Syria

An Australian known as Abu Jihad Al-Australi has been killed while fighting in Syria, according to social media reports.

A photo posted on Twitter allegedly shows the dead body of a man who resembles former Melbourne university student Suhan Rahman.

Rahman is thought to have been in the war-torn nation for seven months.

The ABC has not been able to independently verify the reports of his death.

Rahman, 23, was previously the subject of an investigation by police into a threat made against an Australian newspaper.

Rahman's Facebook account contained messages of support for the Charlie Hebdo gunmen and threats to "spill blood" in Australia.

In January, Victoria Police were investigating the threats, with a particular focus on one post that read: "theres no good left in u if none of u do something about the australian newspaper mocking our prophet peace be upon him. Dont be cowards (sic)."
