Two men jailed over 'cowardly' Canberra prison bashing

A bashing by four men in Canberra's jail has been described by a magistrate as a "cowardly" attack against a vulnerable victim.

Christopher James Rowland, 22, and Stephen McCracken, 23, were both sentenced to three months in jail yesterday, for their role in the attack at the Alexander Maconochie Centre early last year.

Rowland and McCracken were part of a group of four who attacked the man, who was alone in his cell at the time.

The victim was punched, kicked and cut with a razor blade.

The blade was allegedly wielded by a man who is yet to face the courts, while another man was sentenced over the attack last year.

Magistrate Bernadette Boss described the incident as a "cowardly" attack by four men against a vulnerable victim.

She acknowledged that McCracken was not involved in the beating, but expressed concern about prisoners ganging up on each other.

Rowland is due for release in April and McCracken will be free later this month.
