Severed finger put on ice and rushed to hospital after man's 'freak accident' at Darwin pub, police say

A drunken man lost more than his dignity in Darwin after a visit to the pub ended with his severed ring finger being rushed to hospital, police say.

The 51-year-old man from Humpty Doo in Darwin's rural area had been ordered to leave Squires Tavern on Edmund Street about 3:30am, Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said.

In the course of arguing with the pub's bouncers, the man's hand became wedged in a door, somehow severing the finger.

An ambulance rushed the man and his ring finger to hospital.

"We did our best to put it [the finger] in some ice - a slurry until it reached the hospital," Superintendent Jorgensen said.

"He was very upset."

She said police would not be laying charges as the "losing of the finger" incident appeared to be a "freak accident".

"Investigations were undertaken and it appears there was no fault on either side," Superintendent Jorgensen said.

But the incident was a lesson to people drinking in town, she said.

"A tip for younger players; know your limits, walk away when you can," she said.

"You may lose more than your dignity."
