Tasmanian man caught with illegal catch of undersized abalone

A 62-year-old man has been apprehended after taking more than 100 undersized abalone from Tasmanian waters.

Police stopped two cars on the East Tamar Highway at Bell Bay in the state's north on Tuesday and seized 115 undersized blacklip abalone from one of the vehicles.

They ranged in size from 72 to 118 millimetres, which is up to 55 millimetres smaller than the allowable size for recreational licence holders.

The maximum daily catch is 10 abalone.

The seizure followed a tip-off from members of the public.

The man will be charged with taking and possessing excess quantities of undersized abalone and will appear in the Magistrates Court in Launceston at a later date.
