A woman who won the ‘best of the best’ teaching award has been arrested for allegedly sleeping with an 18-year-old student.

Elizabeth Scroggs, 32, was charged with sexual assault by persons with supervisory or disciplinary authority after an anonymous phone call alerted officials to evidence of an alleged relationship between Ms Scroggs and a student.

Captain Rick Swiney from the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Department told local press the liaison between the Coahulla Creek High School teacher and student was reportedly consensual.

"I was shocked," said Judy Gilreath is the Superintendent for Whitfield County Schools.

"The teacher has a good reputation, has a good report with the students and was well thought of at the school.

"We don't deal with this type of situation very often, if ever," said Gilreath.

Scroggs had been at Coahulla Creek High since 2011, was an assistant cheerleading coach and according to police and administrators, a good teacher.

Details about the relationship have note been revealed but reports have indicated that the relationship activity did not occur on school property.

She is due to appear in court and has been suspended from all teaching duties.
