Gwyneth Paltrow and Heston Blumenthal among guests at November tourism event in Tasmania

American actress Gwyneth Paltrow and celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal are expected to be high profile guests at a tourism event in Hobart next month.

Tasmania's Museum of Old and New Art is hosting 80 of the world's most influential food writers and 200 leading chefs for the Restaurant Australia gala dinner.

It is believed Gwyneth Paltrow and Heston Blumenthal are on the guest list.

John Fitzgerald from Tourism Tasmania said the event would generate unprecedented international exposure.

Tourism Australia's John O'Sullivan said other noted invitees included restaurant reviewer AA Gill from the UK's Sunday Times newspaper and Indian celebrity chef Sanjeev Kappor.

"The combined reach ... will be 400 million in 16 countries," he said.

"We are very excited about the fact that we are showcasing something that we know we're good at, that is food and wine tourism, and we knew that by taking the

event to MONA in Tasmania we would put on something very special and the guest list reflects that."

Lonely Planet ranks Tasmania 4th top place to visit

The visit of the A-Listers comes as influential travel guide Lonely Planet has ranked Tasmania fourth on its list of top 10 regions to visit in 2015.

The travel publisher is hailing what it calls modern Tasmania's fresh, hip and inclusive attitude, and the "brilliant" revival of Hobart.

The company describes the state as "wild and dramatic, cultured and quirky".

As well as again highlighting the state's natural assets, the guide names its gourmet food, festivals and attractions like the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) as worthy drawcards.

Tasmania Tourism Industry Council's Luke Martin said it meant the travel world's influential players would take more notice of the state.

"The promotion and marketing monies this generates the state is money the state could never buy," he said.

"These lists - and essentially the Lonely Planet list above all others - they influence the influencers. So the travel writers, the distributors, the travel agents.

"They look at what's hot, what're popular destinations that are going somewhere."

It also lists the opening of the Three Capes Track development on the Tasman Peninsula as a highlight.

The guide's Asia Pacific marketing director, Chris Zeiher, said the state's inclusion was "sparked by the brilliant revival of super-cool Hobart".

"The state can boast a year-round calendar of events for all tastes. Some of Australia's most diverse, remote and wild outdoor experiences, and a gourmet scene that's nothing short of a foodie's paradise," he said.

Tourism Australia's John O'Sullivan said the state now had three Lonely Planet rankings in the past five years.

"The awards just keep coming for Tassie, and hopefully with them many more international visitors," he said.

The top three regions to visit are listed as Gallipoli Peninsula, followed by the Rocky Mountain National Park in the US and the Toledo district in Belize.

It is expected to be announced soon whether Chinese president Xi Jinping will visit the state next month, further exposing the state to the international tourism market.
