Hobart private school Hutchins directs ex-students not to talk to media about sexual abuse claims

A Hobart private boys school at the centre of allegations of sexual assault in the 1960s has written to former students directing them not to speak to the media.

The Hutchins School has sent a letter to thousands of Old Boys Association members ahead of its appearance before the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

The Anglican day and boarding school is due to appear at the commission's first public hearings in the Tasmania next month.

Allegations have been made against former headmaster David Lawrence and former teacher Lyndon Hickman, both of whom have since died.

The letter from the school's chairman, David Morris, asked anyone contacted by the media to direct the call to the headmaster's office.

"The Hutchins School is aware of the allegations and has sought to deal with them in the past," the letter read.

"The Hutchins School and the (Anglican) Diocese will co-operate fully with the royal commission and are committed to assisting the commission."

In a statement Mr Morris confirmed the letter had been sent and said the school did not believe formers students should have to answer media inquiries.

The letter was sent to 9,000 members of the school community, including parents of current students.

"The school has also facilitated a comprehensive process to support members of the entire school community through matters raised by the Royal Commission," the statement said.

A former student at a catholic school in Hobart made a plea last week for others to come forward and give evidence at the hearings.
