Is this the most selfish selfie ever?
The world’s obsession with ‘selfies’ has hit an all-time low after a scarf-clad woman smiled while allegedly taking a photo of herself in front of a suicidal man.
The anonymous woman was reportedly part of a group of onlookers who had gathered to watch the dramatic rescue of a man who had climbed to the top of the Brooklyn Bridge.
She landed herself on the front cover of the New York Post after turning her back on the scene, angling her phone towards the ongoing debacle and snapping a photo.
The Post reportedly then asked her for her name, to which she replied “I’d rather not,” before scurrying out of Brooklyn Bridge Park.
The unidentified man was eventually saved from by police officers and was helped off the bridge to safety.
It seems almost certain the selfie originated in Australia with a young drunk first using the word to describe a self-portrait photograph more than a decade ago.
After giving the world the Hills Hoist, dual flush toilets and cask wine, Australia can now take credit for the term "selfie" - Oxford Dictionaries' international word of the year for 2013.
"It seems likely that it may have originated in the Australian context," dictionary editor Katherine Martin told AAP.
