A UK couple who concealed the gender of their child for five years have finally revealed that he is a boy.
Beck Laxton, 46, and partner Kieran Cooper, 44, who spent half the decade concealing the gender of their son, Sasha were forced to make the big reveal just days when the child started primary school.
"I wanted to avoid all that stereotyping," Laxton said in an interview with the Cambridge News. "Stereotypes seem fundamentally stupid. Why would you want to slot people into boxes?"
According to the Daily Mail, Beck and Kieran were so desperate not to prejudice Sasha’s life with gender issues that they didn’t ask midwives his sex until 30 minutes after he was born.
In the initial years of his growing up, the couple referred to Sasha as 'the infant' and allowed him to play only with ‘gender-neutral toys’ in their television-free home.
For the past five years, Sasha dressed in clothes he liked - including hand-me-downs from his elder brothers and sisters - leaving friends, playmates and relatives guessing.
Beck says she's open to her son pursing any career or sexual preference he chooses as he matures. "As long as he has good relationships and good friends," she told the Cambridge News, "then nothing else matters, does it?"
Last year another couple, Kathy Witterick, 38, and David Stocker, 39, of Toronto made a similar decision when they had their baby, Storm.
