Worker makes weird find in sewage tank: 'Not something you expect'

There were fears the animal was going to drown after it fell 10 metres into the tank.

Weird events in a remote town in England have unlocked a new fear for pet owners.

Rescuers have descended into a deep sewage tank after hearing reports a cat had lost his footing and had plummeted into the stinky water below. Images show the tiny ginger feline clinging to life as fire crews climb towards him.

“The poor cat was 10 metres down there, he must have gotten in by falling. We don’t know how long he had been in there as it might have taken time for someone to notice a cat was in there — it’s not something you expect to see,” the RSPCA’s Nicola Johnson said.

Authorities were alerted to the incident by a worker at the Severn Trent sewerage plant at Nuneaton in Warwickshire as he feared the cat was going to drown.

Fire crews fashioned specialist equipment to help free the frightened animal. Video shows one man climbing down a ladder, while another uses a bucket attached to a rope to guide the cat towards him. Once he was within reach, a large green net is used to scoop the cat up and carry him to safety.

Falling into sewage would have to be one of the most horrifying experiences anyone could undergo, and the cat was understandably frightened. Luckily the RSPCA was able to confirm he had no physical injuries, and they’ve named him Trent after the sewerage plant he was rescued from.

Where the cat originally came from remains a mystery because he wasn’t microchipped so he’s been taken to a shelter for rehoming.
