'Explain this': Debate rages over weight of Woolworths potatoes

A Woolworths customer has called upon the supermarket to justify why their bag of homebrand produce was seemingly underweight.

The person shared photos of the potatoes being weighed in a Thermomix, with the display showing they come in at 900 grams, on the Woolworths Facebook page.

“Explain this one and no it’s not the Thermomix it’s spot on checked with... water,” the shopper said.

Of the bag of potatoes, all but two have been weighed.

The bag of potatoes advertises the produce inside should weigh two kilograms.

The shopper had purchased the Woolworths Wash Potatoes in the 2kg variety at the cost of $7, or $3.50 a kilogram.

Underneath the Facebook post, some people suggested the potatoes being peeled could contribute to the low number on the scales.

“It’s not an accurate measure as you’ve peeled them & not added all the potatoes and only measured on the one device,” one person said.

“Weigh the intact purchase on 2-3 different scales to be fair, scientifically. Use the scales in store too. Looking at it, I find it hard to believe that, that many potatoes only weigh 900g, but I’m guessing.”

“How thickly did you peel them?” a second person asked.

Woolworths did respond to the Facebook post, thanking the person for bringing the issue to their attention.

“We ensure that all of our products are at the highest standards so we're disappointed to see that your potato is underweight,” a Woolworths representative said.

“We'd like to raise this to our products team who'll look into this further.”

They also asked the shopper to send a private message along with further details – including expiry date, batch details and store of purchase.

Further the representative also advised the person to bring in the receipt next time they are in the store and see the service desk team.

“They'll be able to arrange a refund or replacement for you,” they said.

“Looking forward to hearing from you soon.”
