Woolworths issues warning about scam shared 50,000 times
A Woolworths scam has gained traction after being shared on Facebook more than 50,000 times.
The post, from the Woolworths Store page which has now been taken down, purports to be from the supermarket’s CEO Brad Banducci.
“To celebrate our 100th birthday, every single person who shares and comments in the next 24 hours will get one of the Christmas good box (sic) delivered straight to their door on Monday, 30th November,” the post reads.
“Each food box contains groceries worth $100 and a $75 Woolworths vouchers. Limit one Food Box per person.”
According to a screenshot taken by 7News, the post was shared more than 50,000 times. The post has since been deleted.
People on Facebook also flooded Woolies’ page for confirmation on whether the offer was legit.
“We're aware of the scam page that has been circulating over this past weekend,” Woolies wrote in response to a customer.
“Please know that we're not affiliated whatsoever and we're pleased to see it has since been removed.”
Woolworths confirms page not authorised
A Woolworths spokesperson also confirmed the offer is fake to Yahoo News Australia, adding the page which posted it is “not an authorised Woolworths Facebook page and is not affiliated with us in any way.”.
“We encourage our customers to be vigilant of online phishing scams, which seek to imitate well-known brands to collect personal information,” the spokesperson said.
“We will never ask our customers for their personal or banking details in unsolicited communications.
“We report scams to the ACCC's SCAM Watch and regularly update our Scam Alerts page on our website to help keep customers secure online.”
One woman wrote it’s “heartbreaking” people believed the scam.
“Desperate people are so thankful to Woolworths and they don't realise it's one cruel scam,” she wrote.
