Collectables confusion as shopper finds Woolworths Discovery Garden in store 'early'

Woolworths’ next collectables promotion has hit the shelves a week ahead of schedule, a Queensland customer has revealed, as some shoppers are being treated to a “sneak peek”.

The shopper shared photos of the Woolworths Discovery Garden promotion at a Noosa store in Queensland.

The campaign had been flagged for September 11 official nationwide launch, but the Sunshine Coast shopper showed off the pot plants and seeds she has already been able to collect.

The latest promotion in the supermarket’s collectable craze will see shoppers rewarded with a small plant pot and seeds for herbs and vegetables, in a move that looks to inspire a new green-fingered generation.

Sharing pictures of the mini pots to a closed Facebook group on Tuesday, one shopper said staff at the Noosa store seemed a little unsure of how the new promotion worked.

“I took 2 to the cash register with me, they were in the fruit section. I put them up with my groceries and I asked the girl how much I had to spend to get 2,” they wrote.

“The checkout worker admitted she had no idea how the promotion was running, and neither did a second staff member she called over.

“So the lady serving me put them in the top of my grocery bag.”

Shoppers given Woolworths Discovery Garden ‘sneak peek’

A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed to Yahoo News Australia that each store has already received their Woolworths Discovery Garden kit to allow team members to preview the promotion.

“Customers shopping with us may get a sneak peek and see some of these gardens on display,” the spokesperson said.

From this week, Woolworths team members across the country will be dropping off a Woolworths Discovery Garden kit at local schools so students can “kickstart their growing journey”.

“Fresh food education is important to us which is why to accompany the send out, we also developed functional educational material including curriculum based teacher resources, an interactive growth chart and learning book, with many more tools available online following launch,” Woolworths said in a statement to Yahoo Australia.

What is the Woolworths Discovery Garden?

While Woolworths was unable to release any information on the promotion until closer to the official start, its previous collectable promotions have seen shoppers rewarded with one collectable for every $30 spent.

The pictures shared to Facebook indicate there are 24 of the Woolworth Discovery Garden varieties to collect.

The latest limited edition collectable promotion was based on the Little Garden environmentally-friendly promotion launched by New Zealand supermarket New World, to great success.

When does the Woolworths Discovery Garden promotion start?

“Woolworths is excited to confirm that we will be launching Woolworths Discovery Garden in September, a new collectable designed to give Australians of all ages the opportunity to grow their very own fresh food,” a spokesperson revealed in August.

“We are excited to give Australians the opportunity to engage in the program and look forward to sharing more details of what customers can expect closer to the launch date,” the spokesperson said at the time.

Woolworths has been contacted for comment.
