Woolworths customer stunned by couple's incredible act for flood victims: 'Just wow'

A man and woman from north-west Sydney have been hailed kind-hearted heroes after stunning a fellow Woolworths customer with a selfless act of goodwill.

Helen Christie, who works at Baulkham Hills Early Learning Centre in Sydney’s northwest, met the couple while waiting in line at her local Woolworths store.

The couple struck up a conversation with Helen after seeing her unusually large haul of bread and sausages.

“We were having a disco and sausage sizzle at the centre to raise money for Lismore flood victims,” Helen explained.

“The lovely gentleman started talking and he guessed what I was buying them for and we chatted about it.”

But what the couple did next left Helen totally gobsmacked. As she proceeded to pay her $97 total, the gentleman stopped her and said, "this is on us".

"Of course, I profusely refused and was teary but they paid my whole bill. Just WOW!!! They are absolutely beautiful humans," she said.

'Brought me to tears'

Helen told Yahoo News Australia that the heartwarming encounter left her totally overcome with emotion.

"I was just really teary and overwhelmed - their kindness was so humbling," she continued.

Helen told the couple that "the world needs more people like them", but didn’t get their names before leaving the store.

In an effort to find them and thank them further, Helen posted an account of her experience on a local community Facebook page alongside an image of the pair.

Her post was quickly flooded with more than 2,000 likes and hundreds of comments from people in the community who said the couple’s selfless gesture also “brought them to tears.

"Two wonderful people. Thank you so much for sharing. It’s so lovely to see some positive posts in the feed. We need more of it. Kindness is contagious," one person commented.

"How kind! What beautiful people. This happens a fair bit in the Hills. Lots of good people around including YOU," added another.

"Amazing. Such beautiful people and to your learning centre, well done for raising money for flood victims," added a third.

Raising funds for Lismore flood vicitms

The childcare centre went on to host a successful fundraiser, raising close to $1,000 for the Lismore community.

Helen, who has no connection to Lismore but simply wants to help the community, is also in the process of collecting books to donate to the Lismore library, which was severely impacted by floods.

"We are in the process of collecting books for the Lismore library which we hope to send off soon," Helen said.

"We are collecting as many as we can. So far I think we have about 200 but will keep asking for donations until the end of March, and we’ll find a courier company or someone travelling to Lismore to take them."

If you would like to donate books you can contact Baulkham Hills Early Learning Centre.
