Woolworths shopper fumes at bizarre Everyday Rewards incident at check-out

A Woolworths customer has taken to social media to share a warning after experiencing a bizarre incident at his local store on Friday.

The baffled man shared a post on the Woolworths Facebook page where he claimed a fellow shopper stole his Everyday Rewards points and fuel voucher at checkout.

“Today at my local Woolies I had a gentleman 'steal' my points and fuel voucher by scanning his rewards card after I had already scanned mine,” wrote the disgruntled man in his post.

He explained how he spoke with a member of the Woolworths team over the phone and was informed that it is due to the way the scanning system works.

“She informed me of how your system works and that if I had scanned my own card a second time it would remove my card from the transaction,” said the man.

This scanning functionality allows shoppers to override the first scan in instances where they have scanned the wrong card, without having to cancel the entire transaction.

“But this is also allowing dishonest people who know of this issue to then steal honest people’s points and fuel vouchers,” added the disappointed shopper.

Yahoo News Australia spoke to a Woolworths spokesperson and they confirmed the issue had been resolved and the points and fuel voucher had been reissued to the customer.

The fuel voucher the man is referring to is the “fuel discount” customers can redeem at any participating Caltex or Caltex Woolworths co-branded fuel outlet.

The fuel discount allows shoppers to save four-cents per litre each time they scan their Everyday Rewards cards.

The customer asked that Woolworths fix this card scanning issue, saying: “You have a prompt for your staff if someone hasn't scanned their card, but the system shouldn't allow another different card to override the originally scanned card.”

Woolworths confirm they will reissue customer rewards points

A Woolworths spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia that they were disappointed to hear this incident happened to one of their customers.

“We know our customers look forward to collecting their Everyday Rewards points each time they shop, and we’re disappointed to hear this has happened,” said the spokesperson.

However, the spokesperson confirmed that the supermarket had been in touch with the customer and reissued the points and fuel vouchers they should have collected on their shop.

“If a customer believes there’s been an issue collecting their points, we encourage them to speak to a team member or contact our Customer Hub, who will work to rectify any issues for them,” they added.

'Big shout out': Woolworths and Coles customers praise 'incredible' workers

Supermarket customers have been praising Woolworths and Coles staffers on social media following exceptional customer experiences.

A delighted Woolworths customer took to his public Instagram account to recognise a specific staff member, named Mustafa, at a Sydney store who went above and beyond.

“Just want to give a big shout out to a young employee Mustafa at Woolworths at Casula,” a grateful shopper wrote in his post.

“What amazed me even more about Mustafa is that he went out of his way to see if a staff member could help an elderly lady load groceries into her car,” he added.

“Congratulations to Mustafa and your parents who have obviously brought you up well, and to Woolies for employing someone who really loves their job and people.”

He concluded that if this is the new norm in retail, we are in for an incredible ride.

Meanwhile, a Queensland customer has also praised a Coles staffer for the positive experience she had at a Yarrabilba store on Facebook.

The woman’s post featured a photograph of her receipt, showing the date and time of her visit, as well as the name of the team member that served her: Sarah.

“I just wanted to say I don't usually shop at this store, but I certainly will again as it's been many years since I've had such friendly and efficient service,” she said.

Facebook users flooded the comments section to tag a Coles Customer Service Manager in the post, who thanked the woman in a comment.

“Thank you so much for your lovely feedback and comment, as the Customer Service Manager I will make sure this is passed on,” she said.

“We pride ourselves at Yarrabilba for looking after all our customers but it makes it much more worth it when it’s appreciated.”
