Woolworths, Coles ditch iconic brand - real reason snack is missing from shelves

Aussies nationwide have been left scratching their heads after iconic snack brand Ryvita mysteriously disappeared from Woolworths and Coles shelves over the past few weeks.

Fans of Ryvita's rye-based crispbread have noticed that their local Woolworths and Coles stores have stopped selling it altogether, and are desperate to find out why.

Where has my Ryvita gone?

"Ryvita, stop posting ads for a product that is no longer available in major AustralIan supermarkets. Please explain the reason for the unavailability - has Ryvita been withdrawn from the Australian market?" one woman posted on the company's Facebook page.

"Does anyone know if this is temporary or permanent? Would like to buy Ryvita again," a second shopper asked.

"What's happened to Ryvita supply in Queensland Australia? I haven’t been able to get it for weeks and weeks. I was told by a Woolworths staff member today that the line has now been deleted. Coles also still don't have it on their shelves in my area," complained another.

A representative from Ryvita told Yahoo News Australia that the company has experienced a significant increase in costs to make and distribute its products.

"As a result, we have had to increase the prices at which we sell our products to retailers. Woolworths and Coles have declined to accept this increase and have made the decision to remove the sale of these products from their stores," the representative said.

"You can still find our products at independent retailers under the IGA banner nationally."

Woolworths, Coles shoppers voice disappointment

Ryvita offered a similar response to customers on its Facebook page, letting them know that Woolworths and Coles no longer stock its products, but the snacks can still be found at most IGA stores in Australia.

Fans of the brand who don't have access to an IGA store were quick to air their grievances with this development.

"Really?? I don't have an IGA near me but I do have Coles & Woolworths. Does this mean that I can't buy Ryvita any more?" one frustrated customer commented.

Yahoo News Australia has reached out to Woolworths and Coles for comment, but has yet to receive a response at the time of publication.
