What's open over Easter? Trading hours and where you can buy alcohol

With the Easter weekend just around the corner, many retailers and businesses are preparing to close their doors for the holiday period.

Both Good Friday and Easter Sunday are restricted trading days across the country meaning buying groceries and alcohol could be difficult for some.

Here's a guide to what's open over the Easter long weekend.

Good Friday

Good Friday and Christmas Day are the most restricted trading days of the year.

All major supermarkets including Woolworths, Coles and Aldi will all be closed for the day in NSW, Victoria and the Northern Territory, making buying groceries difficult.

The best bet for those after emergency items is visiting a small grocery chain, convenience store or chemist as many open at their own discretion.

The only Woolworths open in Queensland is at Brisbane airport and in WA the Eaton Fair Bunbury and Margaret River stores will be trading.

In South Australia all stores will be closed except Victor Harbor, Mt Barker and Murray Bridge Green.

For those after a meal, many restaurants will also choose to open after midday and trade as normal.

In Melbourne, the Arbory Bar and Eatery near Flinders Street Station will be open all day, as will Chin Chin in the city centre.

For those after alcohol, major bottle shops will be closed including Dan Murphy's and BWS.

In NSW, alcohol takeaway sales are banned on Good Friday and pubs and hotels serving alcohol are only allowed to open from midday until 10pm.

The only way Sydneysiders will be able to purchase booze to bring home is if the pub has a producer's license and brews their own alcohol

Young Henry's in Newtown, 4 Pines in Manly, Batch in Marrickville and Modus Operandi in Brookvale all produce their own booze, Time Out reported.

Pubs and bars across the country will open after midday and sell alcohol, as long as it's being consumed on the premises.

Easter Saturday

The best bet for getting shopping done over the long weekend is on Easter Saturday.

Bottle shops will be trading as usual and Westfield shopping centres will reopen for normal hours.

Most Woolworths and Coles will open their doors, but some could have reduced hours and it is best to check local stores.

Easter Sunday

Most supermarkets, including Woolworths and Coles, will close again on Easter Sunday in the ACT, NSW and South Australia.

Majority of supermarkets across Victoria, Queensland and the Northern Territory will be open, but some could have holiday opening and closing hours.

The alcohol selling ban in NSW is lifted on Sunday, but residents should check their local bottle shop as many may choose to remain closed.

Westfield shopping centres will be open, but most have shorter trading hours.

Easter Monday

All Woolworths stores, except George St in the city, will open again on Monday in NSW. Most will also open in Victoria and be back to normal trading hours.

But Adelaide will look a bit different, with most Woolworths and Coles stores closed.

Chadstone in Victoria will have holiday trading hours and open at 10am.

Bottle shops, pubs, bars and restaurants will operate as normal across the country, but might have reduced hours in SA and WA.
