Woolies mud cake video shocks TikTok users: 'Illusion shattered'

Fans of Woolworths’ iconic mud cake were left stunned after a newly-surfaced video revealed that the much-loved bakery treat isn’t made in-house, despite popular belief.

In the short clip uploaded to TikTok by an account called ‘Food Factory Aus,’ viewers are given a glimpse inside a factory that pumps out cake after chocolatey cake.

A row of Woolies mud cakes is seen sitting on a conveyor belt before being snatched up by sets of robotic arms that dunk them into a tray of velvety icing.

Once coated in the famously rich chocolate glaze, the cakes are popped onto another conveyor belt and whisked away no doubt to be packaged up and shipped to stores.

The behind-the-scenes look at where the popular mud cakes come from left many TikTok users reeling, with thousands taking to the comments to share their shock and disbelief.

“What you’re telling me it’s not handmade?” wrote one in the comments.

“Why did I think somebody made them? Coles and Woolies lies!” said another.

Even a current Woolies employee claimed they were unaware that the mud cakes were made off-site:

“I work at Woolworths and I thought the girls in the bakery did them...” they revealed.

A Woolworths Australia spokesperson confirmed to Yahoo Lifestyle that the delicious $4.80 sweet treats were ‘created off-site’ by an external supplier.

“We know that many of our customers really love our chocolate mud cakes which are in high demand throughout the year.

“The majority of our Woolworths chocolate mud cake bases are created off-site by a leading Australian bakery supplier and then delivered to our store for our teams to complete the final touches.”
