A woman in her 80s has died after being hit by a van.

The collision occurred on Centenary Avenue in South Shields at 11:35 GMT as the vehicle, a green and white Mercedes, was travelling south, Northumbria Police said.

The road was closed for five hours and police are investigating with an appeal made for witnesses, CCTV and dashcam footage.

Sgt Dave Roberts said: "I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the family of the woman who sadly passed away."
