Three kilos of cocaine discovered hidden in 81-year-old woman’s wheelchair

A 81-year-old woman has been busted with cocaine stashed in the lining of her wheelchair when she attempted to board an international flight.

Authorities say Irene Mesa de Marulanda was found with nearly three kilograms of cocaine inside the metal tubing of her wheelchair when she tried to board a flight in Colombia.

The 81-year-old was travelling to Spain and has denied having knowledge of the illicit drugs, Lt. Col. Carlos Rodríguez told The Associated Press.

Abnormalities in the wheelchair such as a fresh coat of paint were noted by anti-narcotics officers at the José Maria Córdova International Airport.

Lt. Col. Rodríguez said investigators are looking in to whether someone associated wth the woman is behind the botched drug trafficking. He also said this is the fourth case this year which has involved elderly residents and drug trafficking.

Earlier this year an Australian man was arrested in India after he was allegedly caught with seven kilograms of amphetamines found in a hidden compartment of his luggage.

The man was reportedly flying from an airport in New Delhi to Melbourne.
