Newcastle Police described the incident as 'horrendous'

Mr Humphrey told reporters on Saturday the woman had suffered "significant, significant injuries".

"I've spent 20 minutes or so watching the body-worn (camera) footage (obtained by attending officers)," he said.

"It was a horrendous scene, horrendous."

Paramedics and police tried to save the woman — who called 000 herself — but she died at the scene.

Mr Humphrey said the young child appeared to have been present at the time of the incident and was being cared for by relatives.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported the woman was the mother of the child, but the man in custody was not the father of the child.
