Woman, 22, sexually assaulted after being separated from friends on night out

A woman has been sexually assaulted as she made her way home from a night out in Sydney.

The 22-year-old left a licensed premises on Oxford Street, in the inner suburb of Surry Hills, after being separated from her friends on Saturday just after 1.30am (local time), NSW Police said.

She was approached by a man while waiting outside and the pair walked off together after a short conversation.

The woman alleged she was sexually assaulted by the man in Turner Lane in Woolloomoloo, about a kilometre walk away.

She then contacted a friend before going to Sutherland Hospital in Caringbah, a southern suburb of Sydney, and reported the incident.

Police arrived and spoke with the woman with detectives from Kings Cross Police Area Command who then commenced an investigation.

Investigators on Wednesday released an image of a man who they believe may be able to assist in their inquiries.

He was described as of Indian subcontinental appearance, about 170cm tall with a thin build, and was wearing a white T-shirt, dark-coloured long pants, and spectacles at the time.

Anyone who recognised the man has been urged to contact detectives at Kings Cross Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
